Dear Baby Love and sleep deprived mommies and daddies

I am writing our success story with such a huge feeling of thankfulness and joy in my heart. 21 days ago we started the Baby Love sleep-training program with our little girl, Christelle who is now 15 months old. We have not looked back one second, ever since that first day. I can almost not even remember what it felt like to be over-tired, frustrated and depressed the whole time, it feels like centuries ago. Today I feel like a new person thanks to Baby Love and Vanessa, our Baby Love consultant.

Since Christelle was born she was a poor sleeper. I think I am mostly to blame for that at first, because I rocked her to sleep or held her in my arms after feeding her, until she fell asleep, before I put her down in her cot. I felt that this was necessary for me to do, to assure a secure attachment with my baby. What I actually did was making her dependent on being either rocked, held or nursed to sleep, and thus, she wasn't able to fall asleep on her own or stay asleep during the night.

She was getting older and the problem was getting so much worse. She would sleep maybe an hour during the day (if I am lucky). We struggled to get her into a routine from the day she was born. Every night I struggled to get her to sleep by 20:00 pm. She would sleep for maybe an hour to an hour and a half, and then she will wake up again, and be like the energizer bunny. She would go on and on and on, playing and crawling around up and down, with so much energy, and by 3:00 - 4:00 am sometimes even 5:00 am, she would pass out and sleep out of severe exhaustion. By 8:00 am she will be awake again. I tried everything, used almost every piece of advice I received, but nothing seemed to work. I did no stimulation activities with her as we were approaching night bedtime, no tv, music, games etc, but I just couldn't get her to settle down or feel sleepy.

I was at my end. I was so tired and depressed. I cried and cried every time I held her. She felt my tension and anxiety, and the problem became even worse. If it wasn't for my loving husband, and both our sets of parents, I don't know how I would have been able to cope with Christelle. I love my little girl so much, but just couldn't be near her, because I felt so guilty and anxious. I felt like the worst mother in the world. My husband could see I wasn't coping, and he also felt helpless. The tension and sleep deprivation had an impact on so many aspects of our personal live, but also on my ability to focus on what I was supposed to do at work. I felt completely out of control.

I took Christelle for her immunisations at Wilgers Hospital's baby clinic and out of pure desperation started crying in our consultation with the clinic sister. She showed me the utmost concern and gave me Baby Love's information and contact details. I phoned Jacqui from Baby Love the moment I got home, and she referred me to our Baby Love consultant, Vanessa. My husband and I made an immediate appointment, and Vanessa explained the whole process to us. I felt sceptical as I couldn't believe that it was possible for my baby to have two day naps and then sleeping through the night, but I was so desperate for something to work. I needed help and I needed rest.

We started the first day of sleep-training, being so ready, focussed and determined for this process to work. The first three nights was really very bad but I remained focussed and motivated and we pulled through. After she stopped crying, she slept through the night continuously to 7:00 am the following morning. She slept through since day 1 of the sleep-training process. After the first three days, every naptime during the day and night bedtime got easier. I will put her into her cot awake, and she never cries anymore. Sometimes she will fall asleep within 5 minutes, other times she will sing or talk to herself for about 10 min and will then fall asleep. At night time there is no more crying. She goes to bed at 19:00, sometimes she will sit upright in her cot playing with her teddy-bear or singing to herself, and after half an hour to an hour she will lie down and sleep, no crying.

Christelle is a happy and super content baby now, always smiling. She is friendly when she wakes up. Her crying is very limited now, and she only cries when she maybe bumped her head or got hurt from trying to get up and walk. She used to be very hyper-active, showing symptoms of ADHD, but now she is much more calmer, able to focus and play for longer periods. She used to throw temper tantrums out of over-tiredness and frustration. The temper tantrums stopped on day 1 of the sleep-training process. She is a pleasure to be around and I enjoy my child to the fullest now.

We have a happy baby, and we are a happy mommy and daddy. Being able to be well-rested gave me new focus and energy. I am back to my old self again, believing in myself, and being able to give my best to my little girl. Thank you Baby Love and Vanessa. We should have started our Baby Love journey much sooner. We appreciate all the guidance and support.
