Joanne, Richard and Tristan (4½ months)
Tristan was 4½ months old when we called Vivian at Baby Love, exhausted and desperate for some answers. While Tristan had been a 'model' child for the first few months of his life, sleeping through the night from seven weeks old, he developed a habit of waking for his dummy every hour of the night from the age of 3 months. Also, our daytimes were in chaos: nothing was predictable, we never knew when he would need to eat, sleep or play. We could never plan outings or appointments, and were thoroughly exhausted from getting up every hour at night. Enter Baby Love.
Vivian came to see us at home and took us through the Baby Love philosophy and routines. Initially, we thought that the approach seemed regimented and harsh - particularly the part which called for sleep training. Vivian counselled us through the process and advised that we begin the routine at a time when we had three dedicated weeks at home to allow the routine to take hold. As far as the nights went, the first was incredibly hard. That first night, after Tristan woke for the first time, we sat huddled around the monitor, hugging our two dachshunds, as Tristan cried. He didn't wake again until morning. The second night, he woke somewhat later and whimpered for an hour. The third night, he woke even later, and moaned quietly for half an hour. After that, he slept all the way through.
The days, too, were revolutionised. We found the training more difficult to cope with during the day, and it took longer to take effect. But eventually Tristan worked it out and now naps easily for 1½ hours. We were determined to follow Baby Love to the letter, so the routine was restrictive in the beginning. But as Tristan has grown, his awake time has increased and things have become far easier. And even though there were limitations to our outings, we still wouldn't change the approach because the result is a child who puts himself to sleep, stays asleep for appropriate amounts of time, and wakes content. A far cry from our earlier days.
On top of all of this, we have found Baby Love's ongoing support to be invaluable. Babies change - quickly - and Vivian has weathered each change with us. As soon as the routine starts to slip, or we feel that something is not working, we get in touch with Vivian and she responds with lightning speed to help us fix the problem. This support has been the greatest gift of Baby Love because it provides precisely the type of answers and feedback that new parents are looking for, but so seldom find.
We still have our tough days and nights now and then - who doesn't? But we have a foolproof framework in which our child is thriving, and to which he returns easily if there are any interruptions such as holidays or teething. Tristan is happier for it, and there is no doubt that we are too.
We can't thank Baby Love enough for showing us how to get the best out of parenthood.
