Dear Vivian

I attended the Living and Loving Workshop at the end of April where you gave a talk, and then attended your Saturday morning session at the end of May in Johannesburg.

I have two children, a little girl (Gabriella) who will be in two in November, and a baby boy (Nuno Jr), who is five months old.

Gabriella was a good sleeper, not too bad during the day and slept through at night without us fussing too much with her - then my in-laws arrived from overseas for five weeks and stayed with us. My mom, who usually looked after her had a big operation and so they looked after Gabriella while I was at work. Needless to say, her routine went out the window and, before we knew it, we had to rock her to sleep and do all the crazy things you mentioned in your workshop - the most vivid one being putting her in her cot once she was asleep as if she was fragile glass that would shatter and if that succeeded it would be 20 minutes and she would be screaming again. We were getting up about 10 times a night and eventually she was sleeping in bed with us.

Of course, she was sleeping and so was my husband, and I was hanging off the side of the bed! I then found out I was pregnant again and realised that we needed to do something drastic - we had to resort to controlled crying because she was already 14 months old and getting a mind of her own. This was the most horrific time in my life and I thought I was going to kill my husband and that my child would always sleep in our bed - but I carried on and it worked, though I don't encourage people to do it.

It was then that we promised ourselves that, when the new baby came along, we would not go through this again.

I really didn't believe you when you said it will eventually get to the point where you can plan your whole day around baby's sleep periods. I am a different person and enjoying him so much. He wakes up happy and smiling. The nights are not perfect yet but he goes back to sleep on his own with no crying. My husband thinks my son is a legend (should think I am the legend!!!!)

Anyway what I wanted to say was a great big thanks to you as I now have a baby who will sleep anywhere and happily!!!

Regards
Lynette Pires
