Sienna Kerr (9 months)
Becoming a mother for the first time, I was warned about the sleep deprivation that would follow, and surely enough, the first 5 weeks were a haze. But by 5 months, I was still waking up 2-3 times a night either to stick the dummy in my daughter's mouth or feed her to settle her back to sleep. We had a pretty good bedtime routine but that was about it. I also noticed our child never slept in the day. The odd 20 mins here and there in the car perhaps. I'd listen to friends tell me they'd just woken from a nap and I would wonder how on earth they'd managed that. Until I was lucky enough to win a Baby Love voucher at a mothers group I attend.
I never win anything so couldn't believe my luck when my name was called and realised it was for routine and sleep guidance. Because we live in Dubai, we had our session with Jacqui over Skype. It was very informative and thorough and felt we got the full benefits even if it wasn't face to face. When Jacqui mentioned Sienna should be sleeping 3 times a day for 1.5 hours each, I actually chuckled to myself and thought "that is never going to happen".
Day 1, surely enough when it came for nap time, Sienna was rubbing her eyes and clearly ready for a nap. I was dreading the idea of listening to her cry for an hour but after 10 mins of whinging, she fell asleep. So far so good. As the next nap approached, Sienna was showing all the sings she was ready for a nap again. By the end of the day I couldn't believe we had got our child to sleep 3 times. This continued over the week and I actually found myself sitting on the couch wondering what to do with all this free time I'd suddenly had the pleasure of experiencing.
Since we began this routine, the entire family has been enjoying a good night's sleep, and I have been especially enjoying my morning naps and having a shower that lasts longer than 3 minutes, as well as putting on make-up that looks like it wasn't applied by my 8 month old daughter. My relationship with my husband has improved a lot too.
